The partial government shutdown in October was largely to blame for a 3% drop in visitors to America's national parks in 2013, according to a report released Monday by the National Park Service.
The country's 401 parks, historic sites and recreation areas drew 273.6 million visitors in 2013, about 9 million fewer than the previous year, according to the report.
The 16-day government shutdown, sparked by a budget dispute in Washington, was responsible for reducing the visitation numbers by about 7.9 million, the report said.
The communities near the parks lost about $414 million in spending by visitors because of the shutdown, according to an economic impact report released last week.
"These closures had a real impact on local businesses and communities that rely on the national parks as important drivers for their local economies," National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said.

The NPS is just not that into the American Citizens.
IMHO, the headline should read as follows:
“VISITS TO NATIONAL PARKS TUMBLE DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, AND SENATOR REID’S REFUSAL TO NEGOTIATE AVOID PLANNED OBAMA FEDERAL SHUTDOWN. “
Don’t forget to include “Epic disrespect by NPS management toward their citizen users/supporters”.
National parks lose 3% of visitors when O’Dumby and the Dimicrates have a tantrum when they are told to stop spending money they don't have and try to punish the citizens.
Good, good, but somehow CLIMATE CHANGE: the most dangerous weapon of Mass Destruction, (According to Secretary of Statements “Catchup” Kerry), has to be worked into the headline.
Take your time, as Presses roll in 2 minutes.
Just in Time! Thanks, and a GREAT Job!
BTW, speaking of Presses, think I’ll press my bed sheets now. Nite!
It couldn’t possibly be that most ordinary folks can’t afford to take a vacation to one of our gold plated National Parks these days. Naaaw.
BARACK OBAMA was to blame because even outdoor structures that have no gate or barrier had BARRYCADES erected to p!ss off those who planned to see the sights (even if only from the highway). The government spent money to "shut down" these things. They weren't cost savings initiatives. They were "tighten the screws" offenses.
A 3% drop equals 400 million dollars taken out of gov’t coffers?
Heck, mandate everybody to visit a park and we can pay off the federal debt in no time.
