Oh, please. I know of some who probably make close to a million a year. Doubtful that this guy did, as he was a military doc, but they aren’t poor.
Look up annual salaries, many docs make less than a good plumber. The money is in procedures, the docs in the trenches just seeing patients really don’t make that much.

If she was smart, she could've picked up a copy of the best-selling Super Freakonomics and learned how to make 6 figures a year as an escort. Sure, she'd still be screwing for money but she'd have made a helluva lot more of it, kept her anonymity, spared her family from embarrasment and not handicapped her future earning potential.
