Colorado triple homicide: Police arrest convicted sex offender

Cañon City police arrested Jaacob Harding Vanwinkle in relation to the deaths of a mother and her two children.

CANON CITY, Colo., March 10 (UPI) -- Jaacob Harding Vanwinkle, a 31-year-old convicted sex offender, was at the home where police found a 35-year-old woman and her two children, ages 5 and 9, lying dead on Sunday in Cañon City, Colo.

Police officers arrived at the home after the woman's teenage daughter called authorities to say she had been sexuality assaulted. She was able to flee to a neighbor's house for safety.

Police describe Vanwinkle as a friend of the mother who was staying at the home.

She deserved what happened to her.

The children did not.

I personally would never EVER trust a convicted sex offender - the psychologists and the system that let these people loose among us are complicit.

I'm sorry. That was not a very Christian reaction. It was also unkind.

But, I am SO tired of reading stories about women who "befriend" these animals and put themselves and, as in this case, their children, in mortal danger.

Who would ever suspect convicted sex offenders would reoffend? The judges and prosecutors who give out lenient sentences should be held to account

Well, at least she didn’t disrespect her liberal masters by trying to defend herself. There was no “gun death” so we can all rest easy tonight.

Exactly, if it was illegal marijuana he wouldn’t have done it.

As we all know, it was impossible to get marijuana in Colorado prior to it being legalized.

More people are getting high more often now in Colorado - a LOT more. Tens of millions of dollars more.

Please don’t try to deny this.

good one

I am actually FOR legalization (or, more correctly removal of laws AGAINST it)

I smoked when I was young and it is FAR less harmful than alcohol.

But like everythign else, you have to do it in moderation. If you do it all day every day it is VERY bad for you. (Imagine if you drank alcohol all day every day. Same thing. You would be messed up)

But once I stopped (like 30 years ago) and had the chance to partake on it a couple of times afterwards it was enjoyable and inspired some real creativity.

Oh and it stops your hair from falling out

I’m sure you simply neglected to include a link to the data supporting your statement that more people are using more pot since January 1, 2014 in Colorado.

I don’t know the answer, and I suspect you don’t either.

Here’s what I do know. Anyone motivated to score some weed can easily do so, regardless of its legality. Unless they know no musicians (ok, that was kind of tongue in cheek).

Seriously, when the chairmen of the senate and house judiciary committees are conservatives, the death penalty appellate process should be streamlined so that it takes no more than 5 years for individuals like this to be dispatched.

Granted, 5 years is the immediate goal. Once the states are able to judiciously execute such monsters, that should be reduced to a maximum of 3 years, outside of reasonable obstacles.

It says he was convicted, not registered and it was a different state. It is entirely possible the mother had no idea.

Sexual predators who molest kids (and he had, multiple times ... why was he at large????) often target a vulnerable, single mom with kids to get at the kids. Unless she’s having background checks done, etc. (if she met him socially somewhere, for instance), she very possibly wouldn’t know. His molestation crimes were in Indiana some years ago (2004 & 2007) & this situation was in Colorado. These predators can be very charming and take easy advantage of a single mom situation. It becomes a defining ‘mom moment’ for the woman if her suspicions are eventually triggered. This is the point where a lot of “mom failures” occur, when the woman doesn’t want to risk giving up what relationship she thinks she has with the pervert instead of protecting her kids from him at all costs.

So where was this woman? Didn’t know; initially didn’t know but developed suspicions, however didn’t act and do anything about it; did know from the outset.

If she TRULY didn’t know, she’s a victim, too. If she knew from the outset or didn’t know and developed suspicions and let this pervert anywhere near her kids in either case, she’s forfeited her “mom card” and deserved to be punished - this woman paid a high price since he was a murderer as well. The two young, dead kids & the survivor, are the big losers, whichever way you slice this one up.

BTW, this guy may have murdered before: “He is also a suspect in the 2011 murder of his landlord, whose decomposing body was found in a bedroom in his home underneath a pile of debris. Van Winkle rented a room in the house.”
