As the hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet expanded into the vastness of the Indian Ocean, a satellite communications company confirmed on Friday that it had recorded electronic “keep alive” ping signals from the plane after it disappeared, and said those signals could be analyzed to help estimate its location.
The information from the company, Inmarsat, could prove to be a valuable break in helping narrow the frustrating search for the plane with 239 people aboard that mysteriously disappeared from radar screens a week ago, now hunted by a multinational array of ships and planes that have fanned out for thousands of square miles.
David Coiley, a vice president of Inmarsat, a British satellite telecommunications provider, said the missing plane had been equipped with a signaling system from the company that sends out a “keep-alive message” to establish that the plane’s communications system is still switched on.

Older emergency locator beacons can be located by analyzing doppler shifts. I wonder if they could do the same with these signals from the plane.
If this is really a fabricated false flag operation the internet would be humming with red herring posters to keep the docile minds looking in other directions.
Two scenarios, its been stolen by Iran to destroy Israel.
Its been stolen by a group with instruction to paint it as a complete Muslim operation but its then directed to strike a US target with the intent of initiating an Executive Action that would declare martial law, suspend elections etc.

My first thought as well. Although a small effect, signal strength might also provide some help.
It matters little what was posted on FR, the fact is that this aircraft did not subscribe to the Aircraft Health Management service. Otherwise we could all just go to www.myboeingfleet.com and see what was going on. (Well, the airline could, at least).
The ACARS system was switched off. In that mode it communicates with the Iridium satellite network about once per hour. This is the “ping” that has been overstated in the media. At most 5 or 6 such pings would have been received, and these transmissions did not include position information.
Still, analysis of the ACARS/Iridium transmissions “metadata” would be useful, because overlaying the “ping” timestamps and satellite position could help to identify the flight path and narrow down the final location (the Iridium system is a constellation of moving satellites, not geosynchronous ones that always see the same part of the earth’s surface).
So, when that data does come forth (if it does) it will be useful but not conclusive.
I've seen this comment several places. What makes this plane more useful to Iran than all the ones that already are in use by Iran and by their allied countries in the ME?
Hard to say about how Iran plans things, they may just keep it hidden in a hanger for a year or two, and then when the opportunity arises use it.
ROP has the ability to act way outside the box or predicted computer simulations, thats why they have repeatedly gotten away with terrorism.
To us rational civilized folks none of it makes logical sense, to the ROP they are actually betting everything upon that.

I think avaiation experts will shoot your theory down pretty hard. Besides, Iran has enough jet of their own that the world is not looking for!

I bet in some ROP forums posters are saying Israel stole the plane and will attempt to make it appear as if Iran sent it to destroy Israel with a WMD.
