Animal lovers in Hawaii packed a legislative hearing room Thursday with poodles and pugs, asking lawmakers to ban the practice of eating cats and dogs in the state.
The House Committee on Agriculture later advanced SB 2026, a bill to ban the practice.
The Humane Society of the United States says dog slaughter for human consumption is happening across Hawaii. The group receives at least two reports a year of dogs or cats being slaughtered for food, but it says its hard for law enforcement to catch animal slaughterers.
When we do get these reports of cases of dog or cat slaughter, unless theyre caught in the act, law enforcement is not able to really prosecute, said Inga Gibson, Hawaii senior state director for the Humane Society, which pushed for the bill.
Eating meat from cats and dogs is considered acceptable in other countries, including parts of Asia.

Darn — it’s back to hamburgers.
More halal than roast pig.
Would it not be better for Hawaii’s libtards to try getting even one of their public schools to the standards of a typical Detroit school?
I know that’s an awfully high standard for Hawaii, but even libtards can improve. (When you’re living at minus six sigma, any movement is bound to be an improvement.)
Hawaii. Obama. Eating dogs. Everything just keeps going round and round.
Needs mustard and some onion...
Roast dog is almost as popular as roast hog among certain Polynesian demographics.
“Roast dog is almost as popular as roast hog among certain Polynesian demographics.”
There Chinese Restaurants that cater to Polynesians too!
Go veggie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t comprehend why eating a non-endangered animal, one’s that’s privately owned and slaughtered humanely under the state’s laws, should be banned. If people want to eat a horse or whatever, go for it.
There was a big uproar in L.A. a while back where the local Filipino community had some festival and their banners featured a roasting dog.
Go veggie and fish!
societies - including ours - have the right to determine what animals are going to be categorized one or more ways. Service animal, pet, food source, hunted, lab tested.
People don’t like their pet animal being eaten by others? Join the club. I have pets that fall into every category I listed. The only difference is where they are born that determines what they are considered, but they are all the exact same animal and all potentially have the capacity to be pet animals. I have to deal with it, let the other pet owners have to deal with it.
It's all about aesthetics. If pigs were furry and cute and looked like a cat, they'd probably be safe.
Go veggie and fish!
Brussels sprouts and Koi have feelings too! /sarc.
And I couldn't care less about cultural diversity and societal norms elsewhere.
If cats were made of bacon they'd be in big trouble.
If it’s difficult to catch these people, what makes them think that this new law will actually work?
Just more feel-good legislation to try to stop an admittedly repulsive act.
Nanny State PING!
