WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is backing off its push for quick confirmation of President Barack Obama's pick to be surgeon general amid opposition from the National Rifle Association.
Democrats have been concerned that a vote on Dr. Vivek Murthy could hurt the party's vulnerable incumbents up for re-election in November.

Why do we even still have a Surgeon General? Do they actually do anything besides send out missives that could just as easily come from the CDC or Mayo Clinic?

This guy is more a politician than a doctor. He’s only 36, and his apparent claim to fame is that he organized “Doctors for Obama” when he was 29. He hasn’t has enough medical experience to be a meaningful Surgeon General.

He said that besides concerns about Murthy's position on gun control, he also is concerned about Murthy's political advocacy and lack of experience as a practicing physician.Only the Obama administration would nominate a political activist to a position called the "Surgeon General" who wasn't even a practicing physician...

It’s none of the government’s damn business what we eat or drink. Irony alert: Pot’s good, abortion’s great, but we need to be stopped from eating a Big Mac and fries with a soda.
For decades thinking people have asked, why does the federal government need a “Surgeon General”?.
