NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The State Attorney General says Tennessee can lawfully use the electric chair on death row inmates if drugs used for lethal injection are not available.

Attorney General Bob Cooper's written legal opinion was issued this week as state lawmakers consider a bill that would allow condemned prisoners to be electrocuted if lethal injection is thwarted by big drug companies or the courts.

The constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. It does not guarantee a painless execution.

I vote for nitrogen asphyxiation. It has happened accidently, and from what I recall it is particularly insidious because the victims have no sensation of discomfort whatsoever. They just pass out, and then die in short order.

The same is true for Carbon Monoxide.

The skin of the victim even looks fully oxygenated. Their skin will still have a rosy hue.

With normal asphyxiation the nail beds turn blue early then the entire skin turns blue. Not true with carbon monoxide poisoning. There are no obvious external signs of asphyxiation. The victim simply falls asleep and stops breathing. NO pain (unless it is a chronic exposure where a headache may occur), no gasping for breath and no fear.

“You Can Be Sure If It’s Westinghouse”

You have be quite old to get the reference.

War of the Currents? AC vs DC?

In 1903, Westinghouse's rival, Thomas Edison, made a movie of the electrocution with high voltage AC, supervised by Edison employees, of Topsy, a Coney Island circus elephant which had recently killed three men.

Someone must have gotten fed up with all the quibbling and blubbering about which pharmaceutical agent is less lethal.

Sounds very much like carbon monoxide poisoning - maybe faster.

Until they switched to lethal injection, the Thai method did the job with no ifs, ands, or buts: 15 full auto rounds in the back, in the heart area.

Why not just drop them in a pool of Magma.

Seriously, all I see is revenge, justice thats really cold revenge. They say its humane but its a circus. Why in the name of God can there not be a chamber that can have a superfast blast of plasma, so hot and so fast the mind will never register it, the body is totally consumed.

Why in the hell not? Dead is dead, but no we have to have a society thats gets its secret jollies off by spreading it out slowly, even electrocution is slow, the person feels it, its not painless.

Stupid ass morons just want another death carnival.

If it’s too merciful it completely loses all deterrent value.

The death penalty has already lost deterrence. By the time the criminal is executed, it's decades later and everybody who knew him has forgotten him.

A criminal is far more likely to get shot by a CCW than he is to be executed, which may be a driving force behind the decline in crime in CCW states with strong self-defense laws.
