Planned changes to the Republican Party's presidential selection process are part of a rebuilding process that will strengthen the GOP brand and hopefully make its presidential nominee more competitive in 2016, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told California Republicans on Friday, calling the GOP's current primary process "a complete disaster."

“moving up the national convention at which the nominee is typically selected to June and cutting the number of debates are “not an establishment takeover. This is using your brain. Everything’s not a conspiracy.”

“Without some elaboration this sounds hysterical. Methinks the lady doth protest too much. William Shakespeare”

Well, remembering that in 2000 Rove and a lot of other establishment Republicans were trying to clear the field for Bush, I think the measures Preibus is proposing could certainly help the establishment. An establishment candidate who can raise a lot of money early can already run over lesser funded conservative/base candidates. Shortening the primary season and cutting the number of debates could accentuate that establishment advantage.

Could be a conspiracy.

Iowa has only a non-binding straw poll, not a primary. At caucuses, local party officials are selected, and delegates to county conventions are selected. Those delegates are not bound to a candidate.

In 2012, for example, Santorum narrowly defeated Romney in the straw poll. Ron Paul backers ended up controlling the state party and got the majority of national convention delegates, who ended up backing Romney anyway as a nod to party unity.

It’s solid strategy. Trouble is they are doing this to beat conservatives, not dems. Notice they say exactly nothing about abandoning the Romney “Stand there and never press an advantage” mentality that they display every single day of the year in the house/senate.

Nothing to forgive. All I did was point out the way this is going down. I hold no publishing rights to the obvious ;)

I would think it’s the state legislation since either state political party could be in charge at any given time and the rules would change all the time...

Many states put that question on the ballot for the citizens to decide....

Because there are so many “independents” who are locked out of a primary vote...times are changing...

I know in Florida as an independent you have to declare which primary you plan to vote in and cannot vote in the other party primary

That leads to serious manipulation of the process....

If the dems don’t run a primary....all the independents can vote in the gop primary....which can really sku the vote up...

It smells like Rove is masterminding this debacle. Looks like a RINO, smells like a RINO... it’s a RINO!

“Iowa has only a non-binding straw poll, not a primary. At caucuses, local party officials are selected, and delegates to county conventions are selected. Those delegates are not bound to a candidate.”

But doesn’t the party have rules that if you hold a primary before NH or a caucus before IA you lose delegates, thereby giving those two states a preference and protected status?

“... “Who” determines if a primary is “open” or “closed”? ...”
-
“... I would think it’s the state legislation ...”

That is what I ‘think’ also.
Georgia has open primaries and it pisses me off.
This might become my new mission.

Shortening the primaries is a Romney tactic to
strengthen NH and other DNC-Romney-run states.

The GOP will continue to mean RomneyCARE,
ObamaCARE, open borders, arming al Qaeda,
and enabling Obama’s treason.

I’m going to turn 12 degrees off top dead center here.

I’m a small “l” libertarian, and I think I’m being thrown under the conservative bus for lack of purity.

I’m not even a Reagan democrat. How in hell can the GOP (pronounced: gop) influence me to vote for them if I, a steadfast conservative, am held in comtempt, when Reagan won by the graces of independants?

We need a hard right turn, but it sure as hell won’t come about if we don’t bring along fellow travelers.

The best change, and the only one with a realistic chance to save the GOP, is conservatism.

Iowa and NH are barely states and should have very little to do with picking the candidate to wage war on the domestic communists.

Unless the twerp running the RNC does something about that he can shut the hell up
