Washington - President Barack Obama hinted at possible additional sanctions on Russia, warning his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that the United States and its allies would "never" recognize Crimea´s breakaway vote Sunday. In a telephone call, Obama told Putin that the vote that found 95.5 percent of ballots in favor of the Crimean Peninsula leaving Ukraine to rejoin Russia violated the Ukrainian constitution. "President Obama emphasized that the Crimean ´referendum,´ which violates the Ukrainian constitution and occurred under duress of Russian military intervention, would never be recognized by the United States and the international community," the White House said in a statement. zero is stirring this up to take his myriad of scandals off the front page. Ukraine is in the larger geopolitical scheme a relative backwater and of little immediate national security interests worth going to war over.
The President also hinted that the International Olympic Committee would be asking for their medals back if Russia doesn’t leave.
Oh, Putin doesn’t care. He’s the President for Life and the incarnation of Christian virtues, according to the Putinista fan club.
This is starting to make me very nervous. Obama has been called a wimp in so many places and so many times (and he is, of course) but he does have a phone and a button. I am very very very worried that he might do something stupid just to prove he’s not the light-loafered pantywaist everyone thinks he is.
Putin backed down Obama before over Syria where the stakes were considerably less (from Russia’s point of view.) We do not have a stake or a stick in the Ukraine and big tough talk that has nothing but nukes behind it is a very scary reality.

How long will that last? Six months? If I was a betting man, I would say the West will blink first. And with Obama, “never” is one of those words that gets lost down the road, like a teen age boy’s resolve in front of a teen age girl. And Putin is made of far-tougher stuff than a teen age girl.
True. You’d like to think that sheer consistency - consisantly in favor of conservatism - would cause most people to see through an autocrat like Putin. It’s sad that so many conservatives can delight in injustice just because it embarrasses the failure Obama. We all must live with the ignorant policies of Obama and their consequences. I don’t recall reading of any Republicans cheering Hitler for retaking the Rhineland. Now, they cheer the enemy on, like the Left did when Bush was President.
