Hmmmm....sounds like it falls right in line with Putin's propaganda plan.

Former Top Putin Advisor Sounds The Alarm: Putin Has Already Declared War On Kiev

...."Andrei Illarionov, formerly Vladimir Putin’s top economic advisor (and personal envoy to the G8) , has warned in an interview with Ukrainian television that Putin has already declared war on Kiev. Putin’s war is being conducted by Russian Spetsnaz (special operations) forces and KGB (now called FSB) agents and is aimed at toppling the pro-Western government in Kiev. The Spetsnaz forces’ orders include the sowing of civil unrest throughout Ukraine via strikes, demonstrations, staged incidents, and street battles. Putin’s subversive forces will also gin up neo-Nazi incidents with Nazi regalia and Swastikas on full display. Their orders include as well the deliberate killing of Russian soldiers and of ethnic Russian civilians to prove the hatred and extremism of radical Ukrainian nationalists. These orders come from Putin himself. Their goal is to create an image of intolerable chaos and loss of civil authority to justify a Russian takeover of all Ukraine. Putin’s goal is the destruction of pro-Western authority in Ukraine, the total humiliation of the West, and a makeover of the geopolitical balance. ".....................

That’s why Putin has 60,000 troops at the border.

I’m guessing that the more committed Ukrainian nationalists may figure that Putin will continue to gradually slice off chunks of Ukraine, until Putin has what he wants, and what remains is too weak to do much about it. It’s another form of incrementalism. At any given step, the Russian agression is not “big” enough for the West to honor its formal Security Assurances to Ukraine, and Ukraine doesn’t have the firepower to defeat concentrated Russian forces in the East.

So, the tactic might be to blow the pipelines at Ukraine’s far western border, once warmer weather arrives. This cripples Russia’s economy, forcing them to cross the entire Ukraine, through a lot of hostile terrain. (To use another poster’s word) the opposition goal is to “tarball” ‘em. Ukraine lost something like 19% of its population in WW2, and still came out of it a subject country. My guess is that the opposition would accept 500k casualties in order to free the Ukraine. Assuming the Russians could maintain a 10:1 kill ratio (I don’t know that they’d be THAT superior in such a conflict, over the long haul) Russia loses 50k soldiers and their economy. I think Russia folds...

The risk is that this takes time: The Europeans, faced with the next winter and severe gas shortages, might turn on Ukraine.

“I wonder why they are wearing the old Buddhist swastika-like symbol? “

Its called a Wolfsangel. Also happened to be exactly the unit symbol of the 2nd SS division “Das Reich”, which had a nightmarish mass murdering history. These guys know exactly what they are wearing and why.

This is why I don’t have any preference in this fight. The Ukrainian revolutionaries are so anti-Semitic that I don’t care if Putin takes the Ukraine or not!

Yes if the Russians are stupid enough to try to take the whole Ukraine they will have another Afghanistan on their hands. The Ukrainians hate their guts. It will be a war of resisitance and guerilla fighting which will sap their bank accounts and will not be popular with the Russian populace.

Purin would have to kiss that pipeline goodbye and it would kill him financially. The last thought on the mind of Ukranians would be keeping the EU war. Putey’s name would be shite in all of Europe. He does not want that. He really wants the Crimea and to keep his naval base safe.

It only starts if they have someone to fight. If these idiots blow up the pipelines they will piss off everyone.

What happened to Hezbollah in Egypt being “largely secular,” according to the Obama administration?

I think you mean the Moslem Brotherhood. Hezbollah is in Lebanon.

Putin is a fascist. Having spent time there and with many close friends in Georgia - they are extremely nationalistic, just to the left of fascist but not there. With a few exceptions here and there in Tbilisi.

Nothing however is as ugly as what seems to be emerging in the Ukraine as a new government. Nothing is this fascist and evil.

My friends in Georgia who were all about the new Ukraine with slogans, etc, during the riots are slowly and carefully backing away. As you can imagine they detest Putin.
They used to be major cheerleaders, and now they tell me "we hope it works out ok".

That’s kind of where I am too. I wish I knew people living there or had more experience. I am watching the Israeli media but even they apparently are not getting it right all the time...

And they may get help from Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia. All had leaders in Tbilisi when Russian tanks were moving that direction. There were NATO folk there as well.

This time is different though, Misha was a character whom many loved and supported.

Popcorn is on my grocery list.

That was great - thanks!!

One of the funniest news items I have seen was a Russian story about a woman in Serbia who was very old and had lived in the same house her entire life. Yet she had lived under 4 different governments. And a cemetary where her husband was buried, very close to her home, was a place she now needed a passport to visit.

Putin does, to some extent, own this backlash.

Let him clean it up I say.

The nationalists are there but the threat from them is very much exaggerated. This had been a revolt against Yanukovich, led by the Russian-speaking Kiev, Ukrainian-speaking Lviv and supported by others ethnicities, Jews included. Overall, Jews are as split as the rest of the society, a Jew in Kiev or Lviv probably supports it, one in Kharkiv, Donetsk or Moscow, probably not. I have given a number of references to Jewish supporters on this forum, so it’s not a clear cut picture of “neo-nazis have taken over”

This overblown nationalist threat is getting to the point where it’s absurd. Russians call everybody who supported the revolt or the new Ukrainian government a “nazi Banderite” - including Jews themselves. Most recent example is singer Makarevich who was called “Jew Banderite” - a contradiction in terms if I ever heard of one.

There is a lot of media out there which supports at least half of the new government in Ukraine being very very far right and white supremacist.
