Since you’re so read in on Putin’s world, why didn’t his soldiers where their military patches distinguishing them as Soviet (oh, I mean neo-Russian empire) troops?

Call from Ukrainian officer of the squad on the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory: “Please let them [people] know, that if... If we all die here, you must keep fighting for Ukraine, so that we don’t die in vain” -EuroMaidanPR

“I wish Ukrainians never gave up nukes...”

Russian military equipment does not, generally, have serial numbers. According to General Lebed the Soviet union does not know how many nukes it produced or where they all are and he was in charge of production. He said he made 100 suitcase nukes for the KGB but after the fall of the Soviet Union he went to get them back and the KGB said they didn’t have any nukes. So, did the Ukraine give them all up? Do they even know where they all were? Some probably fell into non-governmental hands because that’s how things work over there. A sergeant brought a buyer onto an airfield, fueled and armed a freshly refurbished Mig-29 and the buyer flew it away. The sergeant got arrested but to my knowledge they never found the Mig. If you can lose a plane that big, imagine something you could fit in a suitcase.

I sincerely hope nobody uses one. But I’d put the odds at above zero and less than 100%.

I hope you are right. If there ever is a good time to use them - it would be now.

Putin has violated THE BUDAPEST REFERENDUM. 1994, Ukraine agreed to give up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal in return for guarantees — signed by the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia — of its territorial integrity and independence.
Pray that this will not be like another Georgia!

Watch out, Cowboy Bobskie. The Turks may want Crimea back and act upon that desire! It was theirs before the Russians took it, and, as you say, for the Russians, “...it was never theirs.”

Yeah, but it was the Venetians before it was the Turks and the Greeks long before the Venetians. And it was controlled by various other people too. But you knew that...right?

Russia has invaded the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine and taken over its civilian and military infrastructure. Putin tried to claim they were Ukraine nationals.

Russia claims it wants to stabilize the situation on the peninsula, which has a large Russian population, but Ukraine’s new government regards the move as an occupation of its sovereign territory.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, according to international treaty, Russia claimed the right it can only intercede to stabilize Ukraine. THAT is why the Russian insignia has been removed to try to hide the fact these ARE RUSSIAN SOLDIERS!
Russia is superior force IS TRYING to intimidate Ukrainian troops in an attempt to get them to surrender.

The “military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stationed Crimea” will be kicked out the Crimean soil, in a couple of days, now that the Republic od Crimea joined the Russian Federation. They are considered foreign, unfriendly military units. Either they join the Crimea military, or go home in Ukraine. Tertium non datur.

Wait and see.

They were promises to consider taking action. Well short of guarantees. Besides, I am more concerned with some US Constitution guarantees that are not being enforced.

I will worry about that before I get swept up into this mess.

A friend sent me his thoughts & prayer request: “A Crimean Tatar anti-corruption activist who had been beaten, tortured, killed and dumped in a forest naked with hands bound after being abducted from a pro-Ukraine rally was buried today, and a Ukrainian navy solider was shot to death while defending his post today in Simferopol.

This means nothing to the Russian-leaning residents who shout and sing with jubilation, nor to the Russian government who exulted during Vladimir Putin’s speech about annexing Crimea today.

The Ukrainian government authorized the use of force in defense of the military bases following the shooting, but sent no aid to the surrounded troops who have so bravely refused to surrender.

The EU, US, and Canada expressed their disapproval with the land grab and the occupation, but have not yet mustered anything as a punishment or deterrent beyond pithy asset freezes and visa bans for 15 to 20 people who can’t do a thing to stop Putin’s aggression.

Sanctions were so tepid that the Russian market even rallied a few percentage points and drew laughter from its targets. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk spoke of decentralizing the Ukrainian government to give eastern regions more local autonomy and affirmed that they would not be joining NATO- both points that Russia has insisted on despite offering nothing in return.

There is nothing but bad news for Ukraine today, and one wonders if some leaders have given up. Please pray for Ukraine tonight.”

If the Ukrainians shoot the soldiers wearing unmarked uniforms, Putin won’t be able to say anything about it without admitting they’re Russian soldiers.

If they've given up already without having fought, then it's clear they don't place a very high value on Ukraine's sovereignty. Does Ukraine have a Marshal Mannerheim, and are Ukrainians the equal of the Finns who fought Russian troops until the Russians had enough, losing 1% of Finland's population in the process, while adding 125K to Russia's dead or missing in action?
