I suspect Russia is considering the opposite. Hence the interest in Crimea, Ukraine and Moldova. In a Maunder type minimum a lot of cropland currently in use in Russia becomes iffy. Their only choice is to go south...

Since the Sun's magnetic field is in decline...our current sunspot activity is tracking fairly well with the start of the Maunder Minimum.
