I remember when it happened, and still have no idea what his point was. He is lucky to be alive (though I’d imagine many of those responsible for the loss of Soviet face aren’t).
Being a teen-age boy, he probably didn't have a point - and speaking from my own experience, he probably wasn't considering the implications, especially geo-political ones. Just wanted to see how far he could go....
