President Vladimir Putin has signed a law formalising Russia's takeover of Crimea from Ukraine, despite fresh sanctions from the EU and the US.

The European Union's latest measures target 12 people involved in Russia's annexation of the peninsula.

Earlier, Ukraine and the EU signed an accord forging closer political ties.

Separately, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe has agreed to send monitors to Ukraine, after Russia dropped objections.

The six-month mission will initially consist of 100 international civilian monitors, who will be employed in nine regions of Ukraine - including the south-eastern areas rocked by violence between pro-Ukraine and pro-Russian activists.

The real push will come over eastern Ukraine. I don’t think Putin’s through.

Ha ha, "despite". As if those toothless sanctions bother Russia.

It is sad that the whole world is giving Pooty Poot a pass on the usurpation of Crimea. Worthless are the European Union, NATO, United nations, and the leaders of the United States, England, Germany, France, Germany, China, and the rest who are turning their heads.

OK, Putin is a thug in many ways—a brutal autocrat cut of the same cloth as Ivan the Terrible (did ya know in Russian “terrible” would be better translated as “Awsome”?). Like Ivan, Putin really gives a damn about his country. Most Czars just wanted to milk the nation for their grand lifestyles— a few, like Peter the Great and Catheren the Great, Ivan the Terrible-—really tried to improve the nation. That being said—I admire the smooth way he played Obama and put Criemea in his pocket. I admire him the way British Troops in North Africa admired Gen. Irwin Rommel. I don’t love him—but his actions do command respect.
