CTV News‎ ^ | 03-17-2014

Famous buildings and monuments around the world will be plunged into darkness on March 29 to honour the global environmental initiative Earth Hour.

In North America, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Empire State Building in New York and the Space Needle in Seattle are just some of the legendary sites which will be dimming their lights for the event. Earth Hour USA has launched a social media campaign to encourage buildings such as Navy Pier in Chicago and the Alamo Shrine in Texas to take part. On the Canadian border, even Niagara Falls will see its power cut out, along with the CN Tower.

In the U.K., swathes of London will go dark, with Wembley Stadium, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the London Eye just some of the many buildings involved in the initiative. Elsewhere in the U.K., Brighton Pier, Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish Parliament will also be switching off.

More for me then....my lights will blaze bright as a testament to the brains who figured it all out....to the brawn that set it all up and to the glory of the freedom that made it all possible.

Considering that right now, on the first full day of ‘spring’ it is 10 degrees here and our low temperature tonight will be -7, I think I’ll burn some tires instead.

I am envisioning a ‘light sculpture’ made of of 100-watt incandescent bulbs, shaped like a ginormous hand posed in a “middle finger salute” on top of someone’s house.

It makes me smile.

I will be ablaze, as always!

I'm envious. I had to burn all my tires this winter to stay warm.

See: North Korea any time of year at night. Dark. Just like the souls of those who want us to give up our freedom for a farce. I will not.

Celebrate Human Achievement Hour 2014

Saturday, March 29, 2014
8:30 pm – 9:30 pm

On March 29, some people will be sitting in the dark to express their "vote" for action on global climate change. Instead, you can join the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and the thousands of people around the world who will be celebrating Human Achievement Hour (HAH). Leave your lights on to express your appreciation for the inventions and innovations that make today the best time to be alive and the recognition that future solutions require individual freedom not government coercion.

Human Achievement Hour (HAH) is a celebration of individual freedom and appreciation of the achievements and innovations that people have used to improve their lives throughout history. To celebrate Human Achievement Hour, participants need only to spend the hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on March 29 enjoying the benefits of capitalism and human innovation: Gather with friends in the warmth of a heated home, watch television, take a hot shower, drink a beer, call a loved one on the phone, or listen to music.

On Saturday, March 29, 2014, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, some people will shut off their lights and spend an hour in darkness as a symbolic vote against global climate change. Observers of Earth Hour want world leaders to “do something” about pollution and energy use. What this means is that they want politicians to use legal mandates and punitive taxes to prevent individuals from freely using resources, hindering our ability to create the solutions and technologies of the future. Instead, the Competitive Enterprise Institute asks you to spend that hour with your lights *on* in celebration of Human Achievement Hour.

HAH is an annual event meant to recognize and celebrate the fact that this is the greatest time to be alive, and that the reason we have come is that people have been free to use their minds and the resources in their environment to experiment, create, and innovate. Participants in HAH recognize the necessity to protect the individual persons from government coercion, so that we may continue innovating and improving our lives and the world around us.

See how far we’ve come.

I'm saving the trees to keep warm this summer. I waited to the prevailing wind was blowing towards the neighbor I don't like. Will probably need to clean the chimneys sooner. ;-)

I recently learned that my Leftist Texas city will fine you for keeping my Christimas lights up past January.

And yes, they’re participating in this “hour of darkness.”
