Why did he not just teach his son how to fight? My Dad always told me to learn to fight my own battles. Now the boy will be looked upon as a total wuss! Like most of his generation, he will become an overprotected mamma’s boy, without the stones to get down in the dirt.

Because then the school will have his son arrested for assault because the system is that screwed up.

.......exactly what they did in my small elementary school in the late fifties in rural Central Texas. If two boys were having problems Mr. Jones would put them in the boxing ring (as long as they were approximately the same size). Without exception, this resolved the issues between the two boys and they left each other alone.

Leading up to ring action, he would tell both sides that “if you two guys don’t get along, I’m gonna put you in the ring”. Many times this ended it.

If a situation arose where a larger kid was picking on a smaller kid Mr. Jones had the fix for that too. He would paddle his ass with a board (flattened baseball bat with holes in it!) immediately! And, I do mean immediately.

Mr. Jones raised a whole generation of “young men”. I loved the guy. Still do. He was a huge influence on my life.

in days of yore when we all watched “leave it to beaver”, that approach worked. instead in a few years the kid will go postal on his tormentors. if i were a school administrator i’d be attentive to the risk factor here.

I’ve been the supervising adult out on the playground with a gang of four bullies, whom I promptly caught and put in time out standing by the building.

The father should have gone to the school for a day and observed. He could have picked out the bully easily.

In my case, I reported the abusive students to the administration and they did nothing.

A few weeks later, a child was killed at that school by a gang of four kids. I could have told the court who they were!

Fighting will get you expelled (not suspended, expelled) and possibly a felony put on your record, depending on how the assault charge goes. Definite juvie time, or adult prison if you're 16+. It's been that way since the 90s, when I was in high school.

Yup, that's what they did with my dad back in the late 60s.

“Why did he not just teach his son how to fight?”

I learned in the 4th grade that a 2x4 can be a VERY effective tool when dealing with bullies.

It’s too bad we now live in the wussified states.

Very true! Me and other boys my age on my street were fist fighting and wrestling before first grade! We got some busted lips, bruises and aches, but we learned early. That prepared us for the after school fights on the playground and later in Jr. and Sr. high school. ....Never give in to a bully! Though you might lose a fight, learn how to do so and kick ass.

The dad mentioned in the article is a total loser and is raising a kid to be just like him.

Because today his kid will be the one going to juvie hall, not the bully. Seen it happen.
