It was “necessary” from the standpoint that it was just analyzed and revealed to the authorities - and the MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT wanted to be “ahead” of the inevitable news leaks - especially for the families.

It may be quite common because of the many instances at all levels of government and authority of said governments and authorities lying through their teeth.

I read where Malaysia offered the families $5,000 up front but the devil was in the details in the papers they wanted the families to sign in order to get it.

I think it’s more a revelation of the “mental state” of the poster ... :-) ...

I believe I read that the standard amount required is some figure over $100,000 by International Law. However, I would imagine that family members will “hold out for more” than the legal amount required.

Left hand side under LIVE TEXT

Here’s the full text of that statement by Malaysian PM Najib Razak:

“This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation

Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.”

Seriously? It took them 10 days to analyse the INMARSAT data? I had heard on CNN that the data was sent from INMARSAT to Malaysia to the US on Mar 12 analysed for 2 days, returned to Malaysia and resent to the US for further analyzing.

These people sux. I get the need to be thorough, but really? Took INMARSAT 4 days to retrieve satellite data?

Prayers for the families.

And this was always the most likely result of the flight. Wild imaginations, personal hunches, your “gut” all aside the most likely reason that an airliner with 240-odd people on it to have not been seen or heard from in two weeks was that it was in some water somewhere. Not a conspiracy. Not a cabal. A bad happenstance.

The General needs to show up to Fox today, resign on the air, and be done with public life. He made an ass of himself.

They’ve got a general location which means that they can now zero in on the black box and debris.

Before this “location revelation” the search was wildly chaotic with no rhyme or reason. Now they can concentrate resources.

Najib said the information was based on an unprecedented analysis of satellite data from Inmarsat.

unprecedented analysis.

Got it? Eat your peas.

He must have had some intel on this...why would he come on and make an ass of himself? There has to be more to his story? Maybe he was being fed the wrong info...

“but bodies in the water this long?”

Probably feet in shoes. Tennis shoes float and keep critters from eating the feet.

The indication was that it was a new way of analysis. I would imagine that they initially did a standard analysis and that gave the two arcs - the north and south locations.

Then, I would imagine, they “went back” to the data to find “new ways” of analyzing the data. Thus — the results today.

“He is retired and you do not know that what you have heard is the truth.”

The 100% truth? No, not yet. But likely? Very likely? Yes. Not secreted in a hangar in Pakistan or Iran. That was ridiculous.

The good General is an analyst for Fox and he went off the deep end with wild speculation for which there is not and never was any proof. His credibility is shot.

He was being fed “intelligence analysis” - I would say. And that’s not always 100% reliable.
