In lieu of your remark about “Madonna beating them to it” - she did more than that, Madonna set the standard for Skankdom.
Compared to her, "skanks" when I went to college were positively demure. Back then, the word meant simply young women who were less-favored by nature and/or hadn't mastered the black arts of fashion and self-decoration.
