I dunno... in Crockett's autobiography, he admits he didn't even know the structure of the federal government when he was first running to be a legislator in the Tennessee statehouse, around 1822. He says a lot of his neighbors on the frontier didn't, either.

He learned, of course. I have huge admiration for that man.
