Harsh immigration realities set in for many 'dreamers'

Deferred deportations and work permits granted under an Obama program don't always result in better jobs or higher pay. Lack of education or work experience is a big hurdle.

WASHINGTON — Working as a Jack in the Box cashier, Marissa Cruz Santos breathed a sigh of relief last year when she qualified for an Obama administration program that defers deportation of young immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children. With high expectations and a freshly minted work permit, Santos, 27, hit the job market, hoping to leverage her new status and a Cal State Fullerton degree into an entry-level office position. But after applying for several jobs near her Riverside home, Santos got only two interviews and no offers.

:snip: Maria Del Carmen Reyes, 31, an unemployed Santa Ana waitress, said she had enrolled in a program to become a licensed vocational nurse but quit after four months...Reyes, who is expecting a baby in July, recently quit her restaurant job to take care of her other three children and a husband, who is in the country illegally and cannot qualify for deferred deportation because of his previous gang ties.

now, the title really should be, harsh economic realities hit dreamers, and a barf alert is probably in order, but in light of the Dems' push for a immigration stand this week, I thought this article was appropriate to the argument that bending over backwards policies ain't workin'.

A program with a sixty-percent nonparticipation level is a failing program. More preferential-based legislation is not going to change the attitude of illegals such as those highlighted in the article. What our policies have created are a subculture of those who have no problem having babies under welfare, or attending college free under AA preferential admittance, or, as adults in the late 20's and early 30's, ignoring laws that required them to at least apply for citizenship themselves at age 18. And then there are those who also expect good-paying jobs to be preferrentially handed to them without having to compete, because if we don't Mexico will yell at us and call us racist, at a time when teenage unemployment exceeds 25%, black unemployment exceeds 12% and the average work-week is being cut to 33 hours.

The liberals who thought up this expensive fiasco of a social experiment are the real 'dreamers' and their timing sucked. Until we can achieve at least a 90% participation rate, and, those 90% can demonstrate a 90% taxable employment rate, we have no business passing additional immigration legislation. imo

My thoughts exactly; go back to where you are from if you’re not here legally. It is not shameful to be Irish, Mexican, Haitian or Russian. We are the only nation on earth that tolerates this nonsense.

That she can't house, feed, educate, discipline, ad nauseum, without our support.

Deport ALL illegals and their anchor babies NOW !

Just why am I supposed to be sympathetic towards this idiocy?

Women who can’t keep their legs closed long enough to get a kid out of diapers before the next one pops out at OUR expense, married to gang banging pieces of garbage here illegally committing crimes are somehow images I’m supposed to relate to?

And then when the harsh realities that are facing law abiding legitimate citizens and immigrants hit them, we’re supposed to give them even more preferential treatment?

Shut the hell up already! My give a damn meter can’t even register movement for them, in fact DEPORT THEM NOW!

Damned leeches is what they are, sucking the lifeblood out of this nation.
