finally... the wheel is turning on the failed concept of voting being a right.

Voting should be a privilege, and no one that is receiving government aid should be allowed to vote.

So, the indigent shouldn’t be allowed to vote? Just because you are poor, you don’t have the right to vote?

There are many reasons for people to be on the dole, many that don’t mean you are taking advantage of the government. Sounds like a form of poll tax to me.

I think the Founding Fathers initially reserved the right to vote to property owners as the poor will tend to vote for largess leading to government corruption.

I don’t care what the reason is, but if you aren’t supporting the government financially, you should not have a right to vote.

Really not that much govt aid in Thailand. No social security like we have, and no welfare system. Although not involved in the politics of Thailand, I lived there for 2+ yrs. To me, its the elites in Bangkok trying to cut out the country peoples votes to get into power. One of their demands last time was for an unelected council to be in charge of the government.

My point is that voting should be a privilege you have to earn in some way, not a right. And no one who receives aid from the government in any form whether they are rich or poor makes no difference should be able to vote.

So, to answer your question. It depends. Is the indigent accepting government aid? if yes, then no they wouldn't be allowed to vote. Is the indigent solely dependent on private charity? if yes then they they would have the right to earn the privilege to vote like anyone else. That right could be earned in many ways, including having served in the military at some point. So if the indigent person had served in the military at some point and wasn't currently getting money from the government then yes they would be able to vote.

The point of the system I purpose is to keep people who are getting welfare from the government from voting themselves the treasury. And since only those not receiving aid can vote or hold office the politicians first responsibility will always be to those who have earned the right to vote.

Democracy always fails, because the minute the 50.1 realize they can just vote themselves the treasury it collapses.

Oh and aid from the government comes in many forms, I would exclude those who receive corporate welfare from voting too. No one who gets a single dime from the government for any reason should be allowed to vote, not even those who get government contracts to do needed work.

Are you planning on stripping those on Socialist Security of the right to vote ? Not those on SSI, or disability - I’m talking about those who’ve worked and paid into it for half a century.

hm... that’s a good question... I think I would solve it by privatizing social security.

Otherwise you have the same forces at play, people voting to increase how much the government is giving them.

Honestly if it were up to me... and I couldn’t come up with an acceptable way of privatizing social security... I would offer everyone a one time payment equal to every penny they ever pad into the social security and medicare system + interest and end both programs.

I think this government aid has to do with the subsidy to rice farmers. That’s been a sore point for many people. The government didn’t pay all it said it would, and consumers had to pay higher prices. Money disappeared, and people are PO’ed.
