MSNBC is in serious trouble
By DYLAN BYERS | 3/26/14 12:01 PM EDT
This is the story of MSNBC in a nutshell: It rose to prominence on its criticism of George W. Bush, peaked during Barack Obama's historic 2008 campaign, and, by criticizing Republicans and championing liberal causes, sustained its viewership in the years that followed.
Until now.
MSNBC suffered harder loses in 2013 -- in terms of both viewership and revenue -- than either of its competitors at Fox News and CNN, according to Nielsen data featured in a new Pew Research report. Prime-time viewership declined by a staggering 24 percent (nearly twice the loss sustained by CNN and four-times that sustained by Fox News). Daytime viewership fell by 15 percent, even as it rose at both of the other networks.
On the revenue side, MSNBC was projected to decline by 2 percent, while both CNN and Fox News were projected to experience growth of 2 percent and 5 percent, respectively. MSNBC was expected to bring in $475 million in revenue: less than half what CNN will make and roughly one-quarter of what Fox News will make.
Conventional wisdom has it that cable news doesn't have much of a future: The audience is old and getting older, the television landscape is growing more and more fractured, appointment viewing is becoming a thing of the past, etc. Certainly, every cable news network lost viewers last year. But this version of events often ignores the incredible revenue gains made each year by Fox News (like a rocket) and CNN (far more gradual, but we're still talking billions).

Umm... Nope. Thought I had a “give a damn” there, but they broke that one a long time ago...
I think I may have a tear in my eye! NOT!
What will Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, Al Sharpton, and Melissa Harris-Perry do?
I get it now, Lock Up has taken MSNBC’s fan base and locked them up so viewership is down. How’s that for planning?
Well considering the majority of Dems belong in the pokey Lock Up is the perfect show for them
LOL, so true. So true.
But what will mental patients locked up in the looney bin watch on TV now..damn, guess this means The View viewership will be going up
Their to flippin' stupid to realize he'd make them some real money, can't have that when Ideology comes 1st...
It's "Air America" only with pictures.
This MSNBC commentator (Bernie Ward) went down for child pornography.
$1.50 a gallon for gas? How old is that pic?..................
I used to check out MSNBS for laughs for a few minutes once in a while. Olbermann was a comic genius, although he didn’t know it. His fake outrage and pseudo-intellectualism coupled with his pathetic attempts to look normal were a hoot. At the end, when he was reduced to reading Jamed Thurber short stories to his audience like some kiddy show host, I LMAO.Now he’s on ESPN (who said they would never let him back on their property) doing the same act, but it ain’t funny anymore, just pathetic. Making fun of jocks for being dumb isn’t exactly original.
Now I can’t stand to even stop on MSLSD for more than a few seconds. It’s like a visit to a mental ward. Doesn’t anybody have the guts to tell Sharpton he’s so stupid he can’t even talk? I think he’s actually creating racism, both white and black. Isn’t there one black person who will tell Al he’s embarrassing his whole race?
PS: The comments on the Politico story are a hoot. A couple of idiot MSLSD supporters are taking a beating.
NBC is willing to lose money to maintain this turkey....this will go on until the stockholders have a hissy fit or the network goes belly up....which can’t happen sooner enough to suit me!!!!!!
MSNBC was pretty popular with conservatives in the pre-FNC days while the Clinton-Lewinsky business was going on. Then Newsweek/WaPo bought into the network and changed its political orientation.
As FNC hit more and more markets, appealing to conservatives, they abandoned MSNBC completely. Under GE/WaPo/Newsweek, the station consciously became ever more left. But it wasn’t in its earlier days. It wasn’t conservative then but it did offer an alternative to the left-leaning main networks, and did offer conservative voices.
It won’t be in serious trouble until consumers can CHOOSE to not have it on their system.
Right now NBC holds a gun to distributors’ heads and if they want NBC’s other channels, they have to carry the PMSNBC network. If television CHOICE were put in the hands of CONSUMERS, you’d see MSNBC’s audience shrink even more...people do NOT want to pay for that crap.
Heck, you might even see shrinkage in the ABC/CBS/NBC conglomerates...

Did he get off on “fat, ugly, slobs, who likes to eat children” porn? What a pig.
I hear that former MSNBC viewers are now getting fair and balanced news from Al Jazeera, Really, some friends of mine told me it was fair and balanced and that you get a better worldview.
