At the time of his presidency, I didn’t ever get the idea that he hated America and wanted it to fail or be destroyed.
He was just inept and believed in liberal economic and energy policy too much.

I know what you mean. My very conservative Christian parents voted for Carter when I was in elementary school. Of course, Texas was largely Democratic back then, before that Party sold themselves to the Satanic Left.
Carter's Christian bonafides convinced a lot of people after the relative Godlessness of the late 60's and early 70's in the political sphere.
