The Census Bureau’s Philadelphia office wasn’t just corrupting the nation’s unemployment rate by fabricating data. It was also filing false information about inflation in this country.

Just how large an effect this fraud was having on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) — and consequently the cost of living adjustments for Social Security recipients and others — is not yet known.

Just like the IRS scandal, this issue is a WINNER for Republicans.

I doubt it. The ruling class Republicans like fake data, too, just like they quietly endorse the IRS attacking conservative groups.

IF it was manipulated for political purposes then that’s a big deal. But what was the overall impact from this one city? Absolutely none of that was quantified. But this article will now be referenced by tons of people on this site to “debunk” the economic data and “support” their opinion that the economy is in a depression. As absolutely stupid as that notion actually is...

--which basically boils down to business as usually because those opinions don't change anyway.

That said, I'm seeing a good side here.  We want econ data to be controversial and we want everyone to know that everyone's watching everything.   I personally take issue with what I see as political influence in how NBER sets econ cycle dates and how the BEA fudges real GDP.  The more pundits poking their skeptical noses into this stuff the better.

mho.

Funny, our government deserves to be overthrown instead of being allowed to continue all this corruption with no consequences.

Historically, it has been the practice of incoming administrations to cease any and all investigations of the departing administration...closing the books on malfeasance, so to speak.

It is past time or this practice to stop. The next Attorney General should maintain all existing investigations and start some new ones. And forcefully prosecute every damn one of them -- irrespective of party.

Otherwise, public corruption will become ingrained within the system.
