PHOENIX—A Phoenix judge on Tuesday spared the life of a pit bull that mauled a 4-year-old boy last month and touched off a polarizing Internet debate on mercy, blame and animal violence.
Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin ruled that the dog named Mickey must be neutered, defanged and microchipped. She declared the dog vicious earlier in the day and could have ordered euthanasia.
“There would be absolutely no possibility of the animal ever doing this to someone again,” Griffin said, saying the dog must remain in a facility for the rest of its life and can’t be adopted.
The Lexus Project, a New York-based animal rights group and the dog’s trustee, has 30 days to find a rehabilitation center or shelter to take Mickey. An animal advocate in court started to cry when hearing the dog would live.
The Feb. 20 attack left Kevin Vicente with a broken eye socket and jaw, and the boy has months, if not years, of reconstructive surgery ahead of him.

I love animals as much as the next (normal) person, maybe a little more than some. I don’t even know for sure that pitbulls are necessarily as bad as they’ve been made out. What I do know is that a dog that has attacked a child and done this sort of damage is vicious, and needs to be put down - it’s the only sensible thing to do. I would put my own dog down if it had done this - it just couldn’t be trusted anymore. Many (most? all?) of these animal rights people have heads complete full of mush.

Utter stupidity. If you really cared about the dog, euthanizing would be kinder. And by the way, who will be paying for this "merciful" sentence?
Couldn’t you just let them live and pull all their teeth instead?
My dog would have been DEAD before the cops got there. They would have nothing to shoot!

That dog needs to die in front of other dogs like him so they get the message
Careful there buddy, there are lots of freepers who just love pitbulls and will deny they are the most dangerous breed of dog. And do not ever try to defend law enforcent officers, wow, the fur really flies then.
I’m reminded of the Burt Hammersmith story about the good dog in the Green Mile movie.
He loved that dog but he had to put it down after it took his son’s eye.

So it’s perfectly acceptable to disfigure the dog instead of simply euthanizing it. The judge is a moron.
I am just thankful that it was not my child that the dog mauled.
