BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Doctors treating Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly said Wednesday he will not immediately undergo surgery for a recurrence of cancer.

Instead, the longtime Buffalo Bills star will likely first be treated with chemotherapy and radiation, according to a statement from Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

''Jim Kelly's condition remains very treatable and potentially curable,'' Dr. Peter Costantino said in the statement. ''Our immediate focus is on controlling his pain and beginning the process of eradicating the cancer.''

Kelly underwent surgery in Buffalo last June to remove a squamous cell carcinoma from his upper jaw. He had been expected to undergo additional surgery this week or next week after the cancer was found to have returned, his brother, Dan Kelly, said Tuesday.

I saw a statement that he “neither smoked nor chewed tobacco”. Well, that doesn’t quite close the door on tobacco, so what’s the story? It’s hard to believe that this cancer was not due to some kind of irritant.

I’m no doctor, but I’ve heard of cases of lung cancer in patients who never smoked and people with cirrhosis of the liver who never drank. Maybe there was some cause that medicine doesn’t even know about yet.

All I can say is, may God heal Mr. Kelly and give him and his family strength and courage.

Jim's oldest daughter, Erin, posted this picture on Instagram of the former Bills quarterback and her in a hospital bed. She said, "Watching the Syracuse game with daddy. He's my buddy! Love him so much!"

Prayers for Jim Kelly and his family!

A true believer, I guess.

Hmmmm... Maybe there is something else that can cause cancer!

Cancer is a result of unknown causes, but is one of those things which can be targeted when a "special interest" can find a way to make another cash cow!

A co-worker told me of qa friend who had oral cancer who never used tobacco. He got it from the gasses associated with welding. There are other ways to contract cancer. A vicious hit to the mouth, for example.

Exposure to asbestos and other chemicals are causes of lung cancer as is radon. While many assume that alcohol abuse is always the cause of cirrhosis of the liver, obesity, diabetes and hepatitis are also common causes as are some diseases like cystic fibrosis.

My mother died from sudden acute pancreatitis, the cause of which is usually heavy alcohol use/abuse or gall stones. But my mother was pretty much a teetotaler, (she might have one glass of wine at Christmas if that) and no gall stones or other known causes were found so it was deemed idiopathic.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, one of the causes believed to be chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation found in sunlight but there are others.

The singer Donna Summer died of lung cancer, and she never smoked.

I have always thought it was 99% genetics. I have known people who smoked and/or chewed their whole lives and did not get cancer while some that did not got it.

It’s just that they left out “snuff”, and it seemed to fit with the description of his disease. Snuff used to be heavily advertised. I remember Walt Garrison pitching it.

Jim, You beat my KC Chiefs in the 1993 AFC Championship game. Here’s to hoping you beat cancer too!
