Wouldn’t a slower speeed at a lower altitude consume just as much fuel as a faster speed at a higher altitude???

The fuel burn isn’t that big of a deal since the burn rate is 6700-7100#/hr at 36k to 41k with comparable mach#. So you’d save 800#/hr over a say 6 hr flight, and you’d have about 20 minutes extra flight time.
