You are thinking of Lloyd Bucher.
He came to my high school in '73 or '74. Great man. He spoke at length about thier horrible ordeal, and how the whole crew was sustained by their faith in the almighty.

I expect John McCain to run out on the balcony covered in
blood saying he died in his arms.

I had the privilege of hearing Sen. Denton speak in 2004 while participating in the "Myths of the Vietnam War" conference in Boston. This was a meeting of the scholarly side of the anti-Kerry veterans' effort, and the former Senator provided fascinating information during his keynote address to the conference. Scroll down the transcript a bit to read his remarks.

As much as I loath Juan’s joke performance as senator. He could have gotten out of the Hilton, early as the son of an admiral but refused.
Give him credit for that.

It’s way back in the recesses of my memories but it sure rang a bell seeing that photograph.

The guy gets my respect. No doubt about it.
That took a lot of guts.
Too bad “...living next to McCain.” was missed...

I believe there are some things that could be said to counter that mindset, but I wasn’t there and I’ll leave it to those who were.
For me it has always been very hard to think about what he was like before and after his Hanoi Hilton stint, and still come away thinking the years there were completely honorable.
This guy selected the wrong path at almost every turn in life we can document, IMO.
