Time for a New Laptop
03.28.14 | chickensoup

Time for a new laptop. The Sony Vaio is getting tired. Am looking for a reasonably priced laptop with some power to it. It is a desktop replacement so it cannot be one of those sissy teenyweenies.

Currently have a 4gb ram, 2.20ghrtz 64 bit system running my beloved Windows 7 with word and outlook 2003.

Looking for something as big, perhaps a little lighter and certainly faster, that has a disc drive, and ports for my trackball.

I refuse to consider Dell.

Yes I know, Applehead, they are wonderful but no thanks.

Any recommendations?

What’s wrong with the lap you have? Can’t you get the top resurfaced?

My wife is extremely happy with her Toshiba laptop, my sons with their Acers.

My advice: get a Mac and don’t look back. Not intended as a platform flame. My IIgs from 1985 or so still boots, as does every other Apple product I’ve purchased since. You can run your beloved Windows 7 in Bootcamp or inside Parallels Desktop.

Another recommendation for Toshiba and Start 8.

It indeed sucks THAT bad.(don’t let anyone tell you otherwise)

Agreed. I know of no human who thinks 8 (in any flavor) is any good. Windows 8 is the inspiration for Linux for a new generation of users...I hope the Distro companies are prepared for the rush.

Own two Asus laptops. Oldest one is 3 years old. Never given me a problem.

Steer clear of anything with the names Lenovo, HP, Dell, Gateway and MSI on them. I cannot tell you how many of these I’ve fixed (physical repairs, HDD’s and undoing crapware installed on them for friends and family.) If you gave me one of these I’d just pitch it in the garbage for all they’re worth. Crappy build quality.

I’m on a Toshiba laptop now, but have a (like an ARVN M-16: fairly new, barely used) HP desktop—Pavilion w/ Windows 7, one of the last at the time—and I can’t get the !&$! thing to copy files from a 1Omega portable hard drive.
Nothing but grief so far with HP. I used to love their business printers, but never again.

Without getting an Apple, two of the best features I like on my MacBook are a metal chassis and solid state hard drive.

Lenovo stuff has been good for us at work. Maybe ten percent less solid a build than five years back but still way above a lot of others. Less expensive choice would be an Asus.

Lenovo has the 2 in 1 stuff as well. The Yoga series has 500 to $1,100 range to its various models that are a laptop that flips into a tablet style.

No, I'm saying buy something with an solid state drive. No moving parts to fail, just ram. They'll make even an old turd computer from 7 years ago (Assuming it's SATA)scream.

Right now Newegg has a 60Gb on sale for $50. That's plenty of size for a boot drive, and you can always use a cheap USB drive for additional storage.

Intel i5 or i7 processor. Am unsure what the equivalent AMD would be.

7200 rpm hard drive would load faster than the 5400 rpm.

Check bargains at Tigerdirect.com and Neweggs.com.

I run 8 or 8.1 on all of my desktops, including one at work and I don’t get the hate for 8. It works just fine, even on a non-touchscreen system, once you spend the 15-20 minutes it takes to wrap your mind around the new interface and set the start screen up with the things you use most frequently. Many of the admin tools are superior to the ones that came with 7 and earlier.

My nephew bought a pretty high-end Asus (gaming, etc) that he took to Afghanistan and back. Running just like the day he got it.

Toshiba Satellites are great unless you like a working battery or need the fan cleaned

Absolutely. Buy a Macbook Pro.

If you value your personal time at anything above $0, you will come out ahead not being an unpaid tech - fixing Windows, not have to spend your valuable time running malware programs, virus programs, etc. One extra bonus is that other Windows users will quit asking you to fix their computers.

Of course, for anyone who simply must use initial cost as their only criteria and who values their personal time as $0, I suggest the cheapest Linux computer you can find. Or, try to boost your income.
