Libya poised to retake oil ports from rebels in move that could split country

Libyan government forces are poised to attack rebels blockading key oil ports this weekend in an offensive that risks splitting the country apart.

A deadline for rebels in the eastern province of Cyrenaica to hand over the ports, blockaded since last summer, has passed with the opposition still in control and vowing to form a breakaway state if attacked.

Rebel militias are dug in along Red Wadi, a valley preventing access along Libya's coastal highway to three blockaded ports. "The deadline is already over," said Osama Buera, a spokesman for the rebel Cyrenaica Political Bureau. "The central authorities in Tripoli are in a weak position. We still encourage a serious dialogue, otherwise we will just break away declaring the independence of new Cyrenaica."

Meanwhile, militias in the western mountain town of Zintan have cut one of Libya's last remaining pipelines, further choking production and leaving the government facing rebellion on two fronts.

Benghazi and the eastern provinces have formed their own government and their own national oil company. We displayed our opinion when we seized their tanker and turned it over to the government in Tripoli.

Libya is delivering ten percent of their pre-war production of oil on a good day. If the government has no oil revenue they can't pay the militias who control the country. The central government can't even secure Tripoli.

Libya is about to explode back onto the front pages.

So does the U.S. government now support the Libyan national government cracking down on “rebels”? They sure didn’t in 2011.

So a nun talking to a high school assembly is Front Page News but a country we turned over to Islamic nutjobs exploding in chaos isn’t.

I’ve been asking for ten years for someone to tell me what the guidelines are. If you can’t tell me that at least warn us when the prude who pulls general chat articles with messages like “get a hobby” or “get a life” is running things so we don’t waste our time here while he/she is logged in.

I would expect Hillary to make a statement on this most ominous situation. It would go something like this:

“What difference does it make now”?

That woman sure has a way with words, doesn’t she?

I, too, have a way with words. “Jail the Bitch”. Gee, now I feel a lot better.

Benghazi Four - Never forget!

No matter. At least obama brought peace and prosperity to Libya. Boy, that Arab Spring sure was great!

When posters post articles to bring unwanted attention to FR, I pull it. Don't like it? Tough.
