MOSCOW — A day after Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised President Obama with a phone call to discuss a diplomatic solution to the standoff over Ukraine, there are signs that a deal might be on the horizon. Both sides publicly laid out positions, though they remain far apart on some issues. “We are bringing our approaches closer together,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a Russian television interview. He added that “a possible joint initiative that could be offered to our Ukrainian partners is taking shape.”

Russia begins war drill. If true, this is a chilling development occuring the day before Putin’s call to Obama.

Yup. The wet noodle is Kerry of the “medals tossed behind the walls” fame.

When Lavrov presented his proposals, I don’t imagine he put up too much resistance.

And it’ll be presented to the Ukrainians as a fait accompli. Lavrov is the smart knife in the Russian drawer.

Lavrov is a slick as they come. He’s a very smart and seasoned diplomat who will steamroll the hapless Kerry.

We need someone like John Bolton or Donald Rumsfeld to deal with the likes of Lavrov.

They also want concessions from West and NATO. There are lots of other moving parts in addition to the energy issue.

If we aren't careful, we'll be down to 56 states by the time Obama is done.

I hope Putin doesn’t have designs on Alaska. Just saying. :)

Yes I think that’s it. Because there is a widely supported bill before Congress to export LNG to Europe from the USA. Such a bill would permit the Euro zone to cut dependence on Russian oil and gas and drastically cut revenues to Russia.

Of course Obama will find a way to veto this bill.

This tells me whatever the “deal” is, it will be the US telling Ukraine what to do or they’ll cut off the MREs.

An important video on Washington Journal CSpan occurred on 3 29 14 that is of profound relevance on US/Russia missile defense realities. Dodge is a junior Heritage Foundation 7 years in the study of US/Missile defense. Dodge mentions that the US has NO existing missile defense against the Russian missile program, is focused on Iran, NORK and accidental launches, and does not mention CHINA at all!

Dodge notes the inappropriate reference of Obama the other day at the EU nuclear conference that he is more concerned with a nuke at NYC than with Russia as a threat. Dodge notes that a defense against Russian missiles requires a space based defense program that is not even designed. In one brief sentence one has to listen for, stated with detectable fire relates to the US essentially being hostage to the Russian threat and should not give in to giving up freedon. Listen for that line.

This is an astounding presentation with vast implications if true. The video is 31 minutes, and with the odd accent requires full attention to the well articulated presentation and answers to queries.
