Methane-spewing microbe blamed in Earth's worst mass extinction
Reuters ^ | March 31, 2014 | Will Dunham

Sometimes bad things come in small packages.

A microbe that spewed humongous amounts of methane into Earth's atmosphere triggered a global catastrophe 252 million years ago that wiped out upwards of 90 percent of marine species and 70 percent of land vertebrates.

Ergo, AGW is real, we must stop all natural gas production in the US, and we need to spend about $500,000,000,000 on more studies. /spit

If these microbes were so numerous as to create
such an effect, wouldn’t there be some sign of them
left in the geologic record?
They must have covered a lot of the earth’s surface.

I got into an argument once where the nut said the government needs to change the ocean currents to reduce global warming.

I suppose because “government” can do anything, just like God.

I thought that extinction was caused by massive amounts of volcanoes blowing up where Siberia was?

They settled in the shale so now we have fracking to get the methane out.

It is on the sea floor. That is the next source for energy when they can get the mining costs down. Under pressure and chemical balance it is held as a solid.

The worst environmental catastrophe this planet has ever suffered was when blue-green algae came along. Those little rascals put forth a toxic gas that killed nearly all of the species living at the time, and permanently changed the composition of the earth’s atmosphere, from which the planet has not yet recovered.

If the EPA had been in existence then, can you imagine the furor?
