STOCKHOLM/HELSINKI (Reuters) - When Russian warplanes staged a mock bombing run on Sweden last year, air defences were caught napping. It was the middle of the night and no Swedish planes were scrambled.

NATO is a euphemism for “Send In The US Troops”.

Europe is getting the message that it may not mean that any more. All the heavy brigades are gone, I do believe. It isn’t like when we were facing down the Soviets across the Fulda Gap. I think most of those units got pulled out for Desert Storm, and ended up at Fort Bragg and elsewhere, not back in Germany. More of the same occurred after 9/11. Any more, it’s just logistics and medical units there. Some air bases.

You are thinking of when Reagan was in charge and built us up to 435,000 American troops in Europe.

Today we have a president who is libertarian on foreign policy and national defense.

No Obama parade trumpet blared louder than those of Europe —they went NUTS for him.

How’s that working out for them NOW, I wonder..?

Well, I guess they got their wish, huh..? How does they saying go, now?

“When Allah curses you, he makes all your wishes come true..”

Putin has already figured it out.

He knows that Obama isn't even a Paper Tiger.

More like a toilet paper pussycat.

Sort of

What I was thinking of is that NATO has always been basically a big office building packed with thankless Eurocrats and the real muscle has always been the USA.

But now they can't count on the USA and do not have the heart, the guts or the military strength to take on the Russians themselves.

IMHO, as long as Putin doesn't overextend himself or move too quickly they (and Obama) will be content to pull back from the brink and let the diplomats jawbone.

Putin is sly enough to know that he can tie them up with diplomatic negotiations each time they take talk about taking action. He gave Obama the Rope-A-Dope over Syria and now it is working for him again over the Crimea acquisition.

Of course, the FReeper Putinista platoon will be here soon to tell us that Sweden was historically Russian, and that Finland is mistreating the Russian minority. Or maybe that the Russians have always feared Finlandization.
