One person is dead while several others are in the hospital following a rollover accident involving an SUV that was packed with 23 illegal immigrants.
The fatal accident happened on Arrowhead Road near FM 2844 just outside the rural Starr County community of San Isidro.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers are investigating the single-vehicle rollover accident at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday.
State troopers said a 2001 silver Ford Expedition was carrying 23 people when it flipped over ejecting several people.
One passenger from El Salvador was killed in the accident.
Investigators said one passenger and the driver, who was identified as a man from Veracruz, were taken to the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.
Paramedics rushed five passengers to the McAllen Medical Center where two of them were still listed in critical condition.
Another 15 passengers were turned over the custody of Border Patrol.
The fatal accident remains under investigation.

Last year an SUV like this was running from Border Patrol, took a wrong turn and tried to run the gate at NAS Kingsville. The guard at the gate hit the “panic” button on the vehicle barrier and the SUV hit the barrier going 70 mph. Half the occupants died.

Lucky it wasn’t a 4 foot Mexican woman driving a station wagon, 23 wouldn’t even fill the front seat.
