Star-Ledger Announces Big Staff Reductions (Democrat corporate owners greed alert)
NY Times ^ | 4/3/14 | RAVI SOMAIYA

Posted on 04/03/2014 10:06:06 AM PDT by jimbo123

The Star-Ledger of Newark, the biggest newspaper in New Jersey and among the largest in the nation by print circulation, announced Thursday that it would cut 167 jobs, including 40 newsroom positions.

The cuts, which amount to a reduction of 25 percent in an editorial staff of about 160, come days after the newspaper’s owner, Advance Publications, announced a plan to centralize journalism, advertising and marketing across The Star-Ledger, its sister publications and NJ.com, a local news portal.

In an article on the cuts, the newspaper described the development as “a grim day of reckoning” and said that whole offices were standing vacant. About 500 of The Star-Ledger’s 750 staff members are nonunion, it said, and the cuts affected only those.

Advance Publications did not immediately return calls seeking comment on Thursday, but in a statement accompanying the announcement of the centralization plan, it said that in a changing industry “some job loss is a reality.” Some employees, it said, will be offered positions in the new centralized hub.

The company has been criticized by some for reducing the print publication schedule of another of its newspapers, The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, to three days a week, and centralizing its functions in much the same way as it plans to do in New Jersey.

Advance has said that the cuts at its papers, including The Plain Dealer in Cleveland and The Oregonian in Portland, are part of a strategy to pursue more digital readers.

It is easy to consolidate your news gathering sources when you just copy White House press releases. Don’t need a staff of 700 to do that.

The better news would be if they were forced to shut down entirely. But we'll take this in the meantime....

Excuse me while I get a Schadenfreude refill.....

Like an onion, MSM outlets like this one will continue shedding their outer skins until they are down to their core - socialism. They will kill themselves just to forward that goal.

The Star-Ledger

The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger will cut about 25 percent of its newsroom today, Ted Sherman and Mark Mueller report. Of the 167 cuts total at the paper, about 40 will come from the newsroom. NJ.com is also being hit.

The Advance-owned paper last week announced the creation of a new company called NJ Advance Media. Following the script set at other Advance properties, the new company will publish the Star-Ledger, NJ.com and other newspapers.

The cuts aren’t necessarily immediate, Sherman and Mueller report:

In packets that were being handed out this morning, those being told their jobs were being eliminated were offered severance packages if they agreed to stay with the newspaper until NJ Advance Media, new media company being formed, is up and running.

Six in ten seniors now go online, and just under half are broadband adopters

Technology adoption among older adultsIn April 2012 the Pew Research Center found for the first time that more than half of older adults (defined as those ages 65 or older) were internet users. Today, 59% of seniors report they go online—a six-percentage point increase in the course of a year—and 47% say they have a high-speed broadband connection at home. In addition, 77% of older adults have a cell phone, up from 69% in April 2012.

Why keep reporters when the stories are written by White House
and democrat operatives?
