How, exactly. as America improved Afghanistan? What substantive and long lasting changes have been made?

Afghanistan made the most progress back when the West was sure of itself instead of apologizing for itself. And Bush's rhetoric about the "religion of peace" did not help either. America inflicted a constitution on Afghanistan that made Sharia the highest law of the land (when the backlash against the Taliban was strongest!).
