American Citizen of 1776: “Who will protect me from the ravages of indigents (indians) or the attack of the European armies?”

Constitution: “Protection of enemies foreign and domestic.”

Citizen: “Who, then, will protect me when I am hungry, am assailed by thieves and murderers or attacked by other citizens for my land?”

Constitution: 2A, The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Yes.

Actually, the presumption of the Constitution is that the right to bear arms and all the other freedoms we possess are already ours. The Constitution doesn't provide them because they are God-given and already belong to us.

Notice how the first ten amendments are written. "The right...shall not be infringed, abridged, etc." They simply confirm what is already ours. They are written to tell government that they cannot touch the rights and freedoms that are already ours - that which the Constitution itself does not specifically enumerate as a delegated power to the federal government belong to the states and the people (10A). Of course throughout the centuries, these have been misconstrued and twisted to be thought of as rights given by these Amendments. But these amendments are not written that way.

The Constitution was written with the presumptions contained in the Declaration of Independence: that all men "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." The DOI is a presumption of and carries persuasive authority in the Constitution becasue of its close ties both in time and authorization.
