(CNN) -- A U.S. congressman is questioning whether the NCAA failed to hold the University of North Carolina accountable during a 2012 academic fraud investigation and is demanding answers from NCAA brass.
If he doesn't get them, he'll call for congressional hearings and subpoena NCAA President Mark Emmert, Rep. Tony Cardenas told CNN.
The California Democrat is referring to a probe in which the National Collegiate Athletic Association investigated UNC's system of "paper classes" -- independent studies requiring little work and no attendance. Athletes were able to get easy "A"s without actually going to class.
The NCAA declined to sanction the university, saying the scandal was academic in nature, not athletic. Illiterates in big time college sports
However, whistle-blower Mary Willingham has said that paper classes were openly discussed as a way to keep athletes eligible to play, and former football player Michael McAdoo said he was forced into majoring in African-American studies, the department at the heart of the paper-classes scandal.
"I think it's important to know if they are looking the other way," Cardenas said. "I think it's very suspicious."

mark emmert is a pathetic human being.
He may be pathetic but he’s making $1.7m a year.
So he’s loving it....
I am shocked, shocked! It’s been an open secret for decades nationwide that courses “for non-majors” that appear to be open to everybody, but are “filled” on the first day of registration, that meet at an officially ever-changing time and place, are the parallel “curriculum” used to put the fake credits on athletes’ college transcripts.
What's the percentage of people that really understand what the use of "literally" means any more? Ten percent? Less?
Well, I think often times they leave out the word “proverbial”...
Literally throwing people under a bus—now that’s the scandal. That’s murder.
The ALMIGHTY DOLLAR ( Money ) is the answer to that "remaining question."
African American Studies a fraud? Knock me over with a feather!
Bet the farm if this were the University of Kentucky basketball program or the University of Alabama’s football program the death sentence would already have been applied swiftly and vigorously. The NCAA is as corrupt as the government.
