A better close in weapon is an old fashioned tomahawk preferably backed up by a Bowie knife or as a second choice would be a Roman Gladius. Its thrusting ability coupled with its width makes it extremely lethal.

In this case, the knives were in the hands of a young kid. Knives in the hands of a strong kid would be a slaughter. I know someone who virtually cut his lawyer's head off with a fish boning knife. He was one of the first people to use the insanity defense to get out of a prison sentence. Something like this is easy to hide and razor sharp:
