Obama’s Next HHS Secretary Doesn’t Really Have Health-Care Experience
National Review ^ | 04/11/2014 | Patrick Brennan

Posted on 04/11/2014 8:39:30 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Sylvia Burwell, whom President Obama is expected to nominate to replace Kathleen Sebelius as the secretary of health and human services, has a long professional career in business and consulting, but lacks substantial professional or political experience with health care.

Her résumé, according to Dan Diamond of the Advisory Board, only includes a stint as a board member at the University of Washington Medical Center. “Burwell’s track record in health care is not well-established,” Diamond writes in a briefing for the Advisory Board, a health-care consulting firm.

Her predecessor, Secretary Sebelius, served as Kansas state insurance commissioner for eight years, giving her control over, for instance, regulating health insurers and approving or rejecting the premiums they set.

Burwell’s private-sector experience has been with McKinsey, where she did consulting for financial services firms, and the Gates and Walmart Foundations, where she held executive positions. In the public sector, she’s worked on the budget and economics side of things, working for the National Economic Council in the Clinton White House and, most recently, running the Obama administration’s Office of Management and Budget. There, she’s been widely praised, and the OMB does of course have to deal with the implementation of federal health-care programs.

To be fair, neither of George W. Bush’s HHS secretaries had private-sector health-care experience, but both of them were governors, and each state administers its own Medicaid program, which makes of the largest single expenditure in every state (I think). Moreover, they had experience implementing significant health-care reforms of their own: Tommy Thompson created BadgerCare while governor of Wisconsin, which expanded that state’s Medicaid system; Michael Leavitt did something similar as governor of Utah, implementing a reform program in 1994 called HealthPrint. Bill Clinton’s HHS secretary, Donna Shalala, doesn’t seem to have had health-care experience. None of them, one notes, had to implement a sweeping reform of the United States’ health-care system.

Kansas is pretty liberal compared to it’s neighbors.

“Obama’s Next HHS Secretary Doesn’t Really Have Health-Care Experience”

That’s not the point. Obama just needs someone to absorb the blame. Then after Sylvia has absorbed so much blame she is no longer useful in that capacity, she too can be fired and go on to make a 5 million dollar salary running the industry she supposedly used to regulate.

“What does he do use the phone book?”

If he selected someone at random from the phone book we would doubtless have a better candidate. He selects for ideological purity. That guarantees a bad candidate. But as posters above opined, Obamacare can’t be turned around by anybody regardless of competence. It is bad from the foundation up.

Wasn’t she the one who oversaw the closing down of the memorials, roads etc. during the budget brouhaha? An Obamabot through and through and shes being lauded by the likes of McCain. That doubly disqualifies her IMHO!

Yes, yes she was. People may recall that during the flap over the barricading of the WWII Memorial (which denied WWII vets and their families access to it) the NPS Rangers were pointing fingers right at OMB/her.

Regulators from ‘industry’ are more likely to be captive to those they’re regulating anyway.

Here, she won’t get any fancy ideas that Obama’s handlers have to squelch.

And, she’s a veteran of liberal foundations, which means she’s a true believer.

My thought exactly. They keep hiring "TOKEN White's" to be their front person, they are expendable, as no one is going to "touch" this black adminstration.

I hope this "House of Cards" starts crumbling and people TALK before they meet up with an accidential suicide.

the amazing part to me is that Sebelius was actually elected governor in a state like Kansas.

As I understand it that abortion mega-clinic doctor who ended up being murdered by an usher at his church essentially bought the election for her.

The Democrats are missing a huge opportunity here.

They should appoing Hillary Clinton to HHS.

She can disappear into her office for a month, and then emerge and make a speech declaring that she has fixed Obamacare and that any remaining problems are minor. Then she can just sit back and dare the round-heeled media to contradict her.

We would wind up throwing her a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes.

Aw, Hell, I shouldn’t be giving them any bright ideas!

She looks like she is about 19 years old like that girl at the State Dept or Pentagon that held up that silly tweet picture. They all act like a bunch of teenagers with the selfies and immature behavior. BO and Holder included. Whining all the time about how persecuted they are. Makes me sick.

Theory: Burwell was the conduit thru which Sebillius’ orders were transmitted from the WH to HHS. And that is the extent of her qualifications for the job.

Burwell knows where the skeletons are buried.
