Armed men seized official buildings in a city in eastern Ukraine on Saturday and hoisted the Russian flag, deepening a stand-off with Moscow which, Kiev warned, was dragging Europe into a "gas war" that could disrupt supplies across the continent.
At least 20 men armed with pistols and rifles took over the police station and a security services headquarters in Slaviansk, about 90 miles from the border with Russia.
Officials said the men had seized hundreds of pistols from arsenals in the buildings. The militants replaced the Ukrainian flag on one of the buildings with the red, white and blue Russian flag.
On a road leading into Slaviansk, other members of the group, armed with automatic rifles, set up a roadblock and checked vehicles entering the city, a Reuters reporter said.
Ukraine's Western-backed government warned of tough action if the militants did not lay down their weapons, but it was unclear if the local law enforcement agencies were taking orders from Kiev any more after the local police chief quit.

Russia doesn’t need to do anything! Kiev is doing all of Moscow’s work for it and more. All Putin has to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

The besieged, increasingly overpowered leader of Ukraine should surrender the eastern, mostly Russian-speaking half of his country to Russia as soon as possible — for the same reason that a person with rapidly spreading gangrene in his foot should agree to have it cut off before the disease spreads to his ankle and beyond.
There is nothing wrong with having an East Ukraine and West Ukraine. Even when the U.S. was at the height of its military powers following WWII, it knew it didn’t have the power to keep Russia from taking over half of Germany, and when we tried to save Korea from the Communists we failed, and we now have a North Korea and a South Korea. We failed even more spectacularly when we tried to save the South Vietnamese from the Communists, who ended up taking over the entire country.
At this stage, our once-mighty military is a mere shadow of its former self, so the Ukrainians cannot expect any help from us.
So what are the Ukraine government’s realistic choices? If it attempts to defend eastern Ukraine from its pro-Russian insurgents, who have already proven adept at taking over police stations, a civil war will develop, with Russia supplying the insurgents. And the suffering will spread to Europe as Russia cuts off Europe’s gas supplies.
If the Ukraine government surrenders the eastern part of its country to Russia, it will still have a big country, West Ukraine, left, from which it can mount a credible defense against the Russians.
The time is now, the gangrenous Russians are spreading. Half a loaf is better than nothing. Surrender, Ukrainians, or die.
