Burger King is hoping to annex Crimea’s fast food fans after rival McDonald’s closed its outlets there.

Burger King Russia told local media that it is “planning to open in Crimea, but can’t say when exactly it will happen or how many outlets [it] will have”.

The company currently has around 200 restaurants in Russia, second to McDonald’s 300 plus.

McDonald’s said it wasn’t politics that led it to close its three restaurants in Crimea, but “the suspension of necessary financial and banking services” which meant it had no choice.

McDonalds may reopen once Russia has set up its own national payment system.

Multi-national companies see lots of profits in Crimea. The tourist season is looming there.
