After 70 years of Communism, there was a spiritual vacuum in Russia. Its slowly being repaired.
Post-Communist Russia is not completely up to our standards but its been less than 20 years since the Soviet Union fell.

it has been noted on FR that Russia and the Orthodox church there are the only ones giving support to the Syrian Christians who are being severely persecuted.
From what i have read, it has somewhat depended whether "Christian" is defined as Orthodox versus Evangelical.
