A proposal to make the city of Irvine, CA and the Vietnamese city of Nha Trang friendship cities drew an explosive response from the Vietnamese community in and around Irvine, local news agencies report. More than 180,000 Vietnamese live in Irvine and surrounding cities--the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam--and many of the immigrants are war refugees who fled the Communist country.
The Irvine City Council was inundated with protesters waving the yellow-and-flag of South Vietnam after Democrat Councilman Larry Agran proposed the friendly relations, which prompted Agran to withdraw the proposal on Monday. One protester shouted Down with communists! into a bullhorn; another cried, Shame on you, Larry Agran!" according to reporting by Adam Elmahrek of the Voice of Orange County.
The GOP council majority, comprised of Mayor Steven Choi and council members Jeff Lalloway and Christina Shea, decided to trash the proposal, which also included making friendship city pacts with Karachi, Pakistan, and Baoji, China. The ostensible reason given was that the proposal didnt use the proper bureaucratic channels.

Good for the Vietnamese community.
Unlike the local liberals, these people recognize that communism is a cancer.
Good. The protesters know what depravity lies behind the Communist label
Too bad Republicans cannot connect with these people.
The DEMS kill us with immigrants on IMMIGRATION - they promise more, all we talk about sealing the border and sending them home.
Perhaps we consider outflanking them a bit when it comes to non-Latin America immigration and make them a deal: They support us in sealing the border and cracking down on Illegals (usual stuff - no welfare, health care, education, jobs, etc.) - we give them higher quotas and expedited handling for family re-unification.
And NO AMNESTY for anyone!
Right now, we don’t offer them a damn thing, so they are reliable Democrat votes, every time.
My daughter is in Vietnam right now, teaching English. They are eager to learn how to speak English and want the economic growth that they’ve seen happen in China. It’s another “Communist” country that has done it long enough to figure out that communism doesn’t work.
One of our young church couples has been in Vietnam for about a year now teaching English and evangelizing in their spare time. The ruling party does not seem to care that the rest of the country is capitalist in their daily lives. They only care about holding on to power.
But, like China, it’s still a one-party dictatorship, even if it’s “Communist” only in name.
You could be talking about the Obama Regime.
Good point.
“One protester shouted Down with communists! into a bullhorn”
You could change ‘communists’ for Democrats in this sentence and you’d be accurate.
During the ‘70s, I attended a night school with quite a few Vietnamese men—most from around Saigon. About Vietnam just before they left, they said, “All crazy! Very bad!” The communists from the north had massacred extremely large numbers of them in southern cities. Rumor had it, that they were lining men, women and children up and using sledgehammers to their heads in one city to avoid spending much on rounds.
“But, like China, its still a one-party dictatorship, even if its Communist only in name.”
Absolutely right, but IMHO it is now more like organized crime rather than a political ideology. The ones in charge want to stay in charge and keep prospering rather than aiming to follow Marxist theology. And yes, I use the word theology purposefully.
