The Phoenix Fire Department said Monday it cant account for hundreds of keys for lock boxes that allow firefighters responding to fires or alarms to enter thousands of businesses and apartment complexes when they are closed.
Deputy Chief David Carter blamed poor record keeping over the past 15 years for the missing 850 keys but said theres no indication they have been used for criminal purposes.
Our accountability isnt the best here, he said.

private company does this and its jail and sued into bankruptcy. plus all credibility blown.
Do they really think a shop owner or landlord changing the lock out is going to remember to run a key down to the local fire department?
Of those 800 or so keys they say they lost I would guess more than a few would not have worked in the locks anyhow. It is not just the fire department that is not keeping up with the system.
These lock boxes they require are such a waste.
If there is something going on that they have to get inside they are going to break the window and not wait to access the key box and then the door.
“Chief, I know there is a fire inside but just hold on, don’t break that window. I’m opening the lock box now.”
