Russia has asked the United States to use its influence to prevent bloodshed in eastern Ukraine, as Kiev threatened a "large-scale anti-terrorist operation" to remove separatists from government buildings.

Russian President Vladimir Putin made the appeal during a phone conversation with US President Barack Obama, in which the Kremlin said the two leaders discussed the escalating unrest.

The Kremlin said the Russian president also rejected Western claims that Moscow is behind attacks on government buildings, saying they were "based on unfounded information."

Earlier Mr Putin's spokesman said Russia had received several appeals for help from separatists who are seeking to follow in the footsteps of the Crimean Peninsula and force a referendum on joining the Russian Federation.

Since Obama has refused to send military aid to the Ukrainians, if a civil war erupts there will be no chance of a Ukrainian victory but a certainty than many Ukrainians will be killed, wounded, or made homeless for nothing.

Yet the Acting President of Ukraine seems resolved to go forward with his suicidal civil war plans. He might as well push Ukraine off the top of the Empire State building and expect anything but disaster to ensue.

President Obama should be working night and day to persuade the Ukrainian president to stop his madness and agree to referendums in the eastern Russian-speaking Ukraine. If he doesn’t at least try, he’s evil; if he tries and fails, he’s incompetent.

There is no reason Vladimir Putin has to send in his troops and become the Bad Guy in all this, since he can simply dress his troops as pro-Russian militants, let them infiltrate slowly, and get the job of taking over East Ukraine done that way.

So who will be the Bad Guy? Once the Ukrainian civil war begins to escalate, there will be calls by John McCain and company for Obama to send troops, and if he does, he’ll be hated by war-weary Americans, and if he doesn’t he’ll be hated for allowing innocent Ukrainians to die undefended. All this while Obama is photographed spending the summer playing golf every day.

It’s time for Obama to act — to use whatever bribery and threats are needed, as he has learned to do from his schooling in the Chicago Mafia — to persuade the Ukrainian president to surrender.
