I was 16 when the Duke died. He was one of my favorite movie actors when I was a kid, because I loved the Western movies as a child. I remember being EXTREMELY sad about it. I’d lost my old man the year before, and I remembered watching a lot of those old Duke movies with my Dad - “Stagecoach”, “Red River”, “The Long Voyage Home”, “Flying Tigers”, Back To Bataan”... all of them.
He was Americana, and personified how a LOT of Americans saw themselves, in spirit if not actuality.
