What people need to realize about this BLM cattle gather is that this is the time of the year when cows have small calves- in fact some are being born or will be any day right now. This was absolutely the wrong time for people who do not know the ranch and the cattle to try to gather them. Too easy to separate the babies from the mamas and then the baby dies of dehydration and starvation, and it happens in a matter of hours or days. The other issue with this gather is the use of helicopters to gather cattle that are not used to it. Though many ranchers now use helicopters to gather cattle when it is first used they are terrified and panic, so you have cows that have a small baby or are about to in a panic situation. It is just not good planning even if people agree with the legal issues they were dealing with living animals and consideration of that should have been part of the planning. I don’t believe (though you never really know these days) the government deliberately killed cattle, I do think they created a situation that led to cattle deaths. Another issue with gathering cattle this time of year is most truckers that haul cattle will not accept baby calves and larger animals in a load, because the larger animals can harm or kill the babies and they are responsible when they are on their truck. Very small calves are not strong enough to stand being hauled by truck very far at all and would each need to be bottle fed, was there a plan for that? So the government had to split cows and calves at some point to get them hauled. What was the plan for the babies when it was decided to do the gather this time of the year? It is animal abuse to not treat animals properly so they need to answer for that.

Even people who think the government was totally in the right to gather and take the cattle have to realize after this dispute has been going on for so many years there was no need to do it now, worse possible timing for the animals and just waiting until calves were ready for weaning would have made all the difference to the animals. People in charge should have been aware that this type of gather was going to be stressful on the cattle to begin with, being gathered by unfamiliar people who likely did things totally different than the owner did- why pick the worst time to do it?

They either deliberately chose calving time or if they didn’t know it was calving time then they are completely ignorant about ranches and should not have any type of management or power over ranches/ranchers/grazing. Calving time is not a secret by any means. Remember the BLM deals with ranches every day all over the West, they count cattle, check on the range and improvements, etc...how could they not know? Calves are a very basic part of ranching and are the source of income, it would be like managing a card company and not knowing when Christmas cards should be stocked.

Fox News reported 2 days back that the BLM hired a Utah Cowboy [=Rustler, IMHO ] and he was paid > $900,000 to invade, roundup, steal and transport the bulk of Bundy’s cattle to Utah to be sold at auction.

Fox News also reported that the BLM paid >$300,000 to a Utah auctioneer to auction off Bundy’s Cattle, in Utah.
