Turkish and Greek fighter jets engaged in a mid-air dogfight over the Aegean Sea twice on April 15 in a first since January 2012, Greek media has reported.

According to the reports based on Greek military sources, four F-16s belonging to the Turkish Air Force approached the Samothraki Island before the first dogfight. Four Greek F-16s took off “to locate and prevent” the Turkish aircraft. Sides faced off against each other north of Samothraki, as well as southwest of Limnos Island.

Greece unilaterally claims 10 nautical miles (19 km) of airspace, as opposed to the six miles of territorial waters, as Turkey and other NATO countries accept. Athens considers any unauthorized flight in the airspace from six to 10 miles in the Aegean a “violation.”

While so much attention is being paid to the Ukraine and Russians isn’t it more impotant to sort things out within NATO before a real war breaks out between North Atlantic allies?

At the time it was a great idea with the Turks sharing a common border with the Soviet Union and the traditional Russian strategic of unimpeded access to the Med from the Black Sea. In a shooting war, rather have the Turks on my side than the Greeks.

Were any shots / missiles fired? If not, this is an interception and escort at most, not a dogfight.

The 'reporters' that write this drivel are clueless about almost everything in their lives. Maybe not even "almost" but totally clueless. The 100 monkeys at 100 typewriters could easily do as well.

Is it really a dogfight if nobody tries to shoot the other guy down?

Great journalism fail. They call it a Dog Fight. This assumes there were shots fired and/or downed fighter jets. Then there is no mention of either.

No details = Sensationalized Event

In 1952 when Turkey joined NATO, it was the only member that actually bordered the Soviet Union. And the fact that they don’t get along with the Greeks isn’t exactly news.
