Rosstat just recently its latest batch of statistics and Russia’s most basic population trends have continued to improve in the first two months of 2014.

Through the end of February, births were stable at their 2013 level while the mortality rate decreased by about 3.5%. While all the normal caveats apply (monthly data is variable, January-February is a limited sample size, things could change substantially later in the year) Russia is currently on track to record its largest natural population growth since 1991.

Harvard and Oxford educated who has a thing for Putin..... His analysis is weak at best and belies the fact that although the Soviet Union (formerly known as Russia) has a military it is fundamentally a third world country

Imagine what will happen if Russia adds some territory (just as an example).

Russia is an emerging middle class country with a high standard of living. Not every one is prosperous but life is getting better.

It beats food shortages and planned rationing in the Soviet time.

Sad thing about Russia . . . one would be better off in Mexico, according to Heritage.

Not it isn’t.... It is about as middle class as Greece. And any one who thinks that things are getting better has certainly swallowed the Putin communist bait.... hook, line, and sinker.

They still have food shortages, food lines, lousy medical care, etc etc

Look at the nonsense that happened during the olympics.... even China pulled it off better than Putin

At least if you were in Mexico there are two things that would be true

1) the weather would be better

2) you can walk across the boarder and have the dims welcome you with open arms and hand outs

It depends on where you are. St. Petersburg and Moscow is modern. Rest of Russia, you probably have a point there.

Moscow has always been better than the rest of the country because it is where the politicians live.

St. Petersburg has historically been more western than any of the other cities (Catherine the Great and the Parisian influence and all).

It is kind of like saying that employment is DC is just fine and no one is complaining. The rest of the country be damned
